At Banquet Pet, we offer a range of dietary options for dogs that may suffer from food allergies or food intolerances. Food allergies or intolerances will need to be investigated by your vet, and symptoms may include excessive scratching or licking paws, ear infections, dull coat, gastrointestinal problems or loss of appetite. Once the specific allergy triggers have been determined, your vet might advise moving your dog to a hypoallergenic diet. Hypoallergenic dog food is about reducing the risk of allergies and intolerances by using novel proteins that aren’t commonly recognised by dogs' antibodies as being allergens.
Some of the most commonly known allergens for dogs are beef, chicken and grains.
The term hypoallergenic means ‘less likely to cause allergic reaction’. Meats and fish that are often regarded as ‘novel proteins’ are duck, turkey, white fish, salmon, venison, and wild boar.
Unlike herbivores and ruminants, carnivores (cats and dogs) have a short, rather acidic digestive system specially designed to digest meat. The cheaper and lower quality pet food brands sold in stores often include corn, wheat or soy in their diets to reduce production costs. In many cases, these lower-quality brands will also primarily utilise cheap meat meals or dried meat concentrates as the key (or only) source of animal protein within their formulations. Some brands will also purport to offer the nutritional benefit of being grain-free. While they may have removed grains from their recipes, they will often replace them with low-grade alternative ‘fillers’ such as peas and legumes.
